Knowledge is Fit Power
1 step.....2 steps.....10,000 steps.....
10,000 of anything sounds like a lot but 10,000 steps? That could be overwhelming to someone who hasn’t walked any further than the refrigerator in years. And if someone has the audacity to suggest walking 10,000 steps in one day......well, they must be one of those fitness fanatics.
10,000 steps is the equivalent of approximately four to fives miles. Have you ever thought about how many steps you take in an average day? Probably not. Most people don’t.
But if you are trying to get motivated to start exercising or to become more healthy in the coming new year, this could give you the start that you need.
First, you must find out how many steps you are actually taking in a day. How do you do that? You purchase a pedometer.
Pedometers track individual steps by measuring the up and down motion of your body. It is worn on the hip and a mechanism inside moves up and down as you walk, clicking off your steps one by one. You can purchase a pedometer inexpensively. In fact, we recommend that you find one that is simple and cheap. Too many bells and whistles will only be confusing. They can be found for $25 or less at most discount stores.
If you are an active individual or work in a job that requires a lot of walking, you may be pleasantly surprised at how many steps you do take each day. It might not take much of an effort to push you over that 10,000 step goal. Of course, if you are a couch potato or sit all day at work, you may have to add a walk at lunch or after work. A secretary is obviously not going to have as many steps in one day as a mail carrier.
But finding out where you are on the step scale and how far you do move each day could give you the encouragement that you need to do a little more. If you are walking 8,000 steps a day, adding 2,000 will not be much trouble. However, if you are only walking 2,000 steps a day, this will tell you that you need to (pardon the pun) step up your activity.
Just remember, if you have been thinking about an exercise program, this is a place to start and there is not a big investment. And the only accountability is to yourself and that little machine on your hip. But be careful, all this stepping could become addictive and you may end up being one of those fitness fanatics.
