Parental Weight Control?
Q: I have had to fight to control my weight all my life.  My parents are both overweight with numerous health related problems.  My daughter seems to be inclined to gain weight easily as well.  I do not want her to be an overweight adult.

A: You have more influence over your daughter’s weight than you may realize.  You did not tell me how old she is but the earlier you exercise your influence, the better.  Just remember that it is never too late!  New research shows that children who have bad eating habits and spend excessive amounts of time in front of the television are much more likely to grow up to be obese or overweight adults.  As a parent, you must actively discourage and take control of your children’s negative habits and begin to develop positives.

I had a client voice her concern to me about her 8 year old son who has gained a lot of weight in the last year.  The client workouts with me every day and is very conscious about her own weight and shape.  I simply asked her who is in control.  He doesn’t go to the grocery store, he is not preparing his own meals, he can’t drive to get the fast food himself.  She is the adult.  Why has he gained weight?

TV and video games have become the preferred entertainment for the younger generations.  Running, jumping, playing outside is no longer considered fun.  Even physical education classes have been reduced in both frequency, time and importance.  Recess is not a waste of time.....it is a necessity.

Children need to be kept busy and take part in physical activities that will engage and challenge their growing bodies.  Sports such as tennis or soccer, dance classes or gymnastics will help them avoid the obesity trap and will help raise their self esteem and confidence.  These children will be less likely to become obese adults.
